Launched in 1966 as the replacement for the Amazon, the 140 series built Volvo's reputation for safety, with disc brakes all round and a dual-circuit braking system. The four-door 144 came first, followed by the two-door 142 and the 145 estate. The B18 engine gave way to the larger B20 at the end of the sixties, and a 1973 facelift brought heavier bumpers and a revised front. Collectors tend to favour early 142s, tidy estates, Custom and Deluxe trims and cars fitted with overdrive, while competition-prepared 142s have a following of their own.
Rust is the main thing to check: front wings, sills, jacking points, floors and the metal around the windscreen and rear screen.
