The 700-series was Volvo's big, square-shouldered flagship from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. The 760 GLE came first, followed by the simpler 740 and the Bertone-built 780 coupé. Enthusiast demand today centres on the turbo cars, especially the 740 Turbo and its 16-valve version, along with well-kept estates and original 780s. Later cars from the end of the 1980s brought a revised rear end and interior.
When buying, look closely at rust around the rear wheel arches, sills and the estate's tailgate. Ask about timing belt history and crankcase ventilation servicing, and on turbo cars check the turbo and cooling system. The redblock mechanicals are well understood and easy to live with, while trim and body parts for the 780 are harder to source.
