Launched in 1958 as a developed PV 444, the 544 brought a one-piece curved windscreen, a larger rear window and seating for five. It stayed in production until 1965 alongside the Amazon. Early cars use the 1.6-litre B16; from 1962 the stronger five-bearing B18 transformed the car's character. Suffix letters such as C, E and F mark the model years and equipment levels, while the Sport versions, with twin SU carburettors and a four-speed gearbox, remain the ones enthusiasts chase – the same recipe that gave Volvo its rally results in the 1960s.
Rust is the main concern: check floors, sills, chassis rails, the spare wheel well and the metal around the headlights and windscreen. Mechanically these cars are tough and parts supply is excellent, so an honest, well-documented example usually beats a quick cosmetic restoration.
