Introduced in 1990 as a reworked 740, the 940 belonged to the last generation of big, square, rear-wheel-drive Volvos before the front-wheel-drive 850 took over. Production ran to 1998 and covered the 944 saloon and the 945 estate, all with inline-four engines and a live rear axle. The 940 Turbo is the version most enthusiasts chase, though well-equipped cars such as the 944 GL SE and late mid-nineties estates have gathered their own following.
