Basic Information and History

1967 Volvo 144 B18 – A Milestone in Swedish Automotive History

The introduction year 1967 marked a new era for Volvo with the launch of the 140-series, where classic design was combined with innovative safety and comfort. Especially the very first cars, such as this example, feature a number of unique details that make them particularly sought after by enthusiasts. Now comes the chance to acquire one of the very best preserved 144s – in near-exceptional original condition.

This is a Swedish-sold car, first registered on December 27, 1966, in Lycksele. The car has only had four owners (including dealers), two of whom belonged to the same family. The current owner – a well-known Volvo connoisseur – took over the car in 2008 and has carefully ensured that it has retained its original condition.

The recorded mileage is a low 98,763 kilometers. The car comes with extensive documentation including the original owner’s manual, service book, and inspection reports confirming the low mileage. The model is, of course, both tax- and inspection-exempt. Finding an untouched Volvo 144 from the model’s debut year, in this condition and with complete history, is nothing less than a Volvo enthusiast’s dream.

Trivia: The 1967 144 had several components and design details that set it apart from later model years, making this example a rare and collectible find.

Equipment and Options

Unique 1967 details such as:

  • Different door knobs and handles
  • Door stops without middle position
  • Chrome horn ring on the steering wheel
  • Chrome wiper arms
  • Special window cranks
  • Round opening button for the ashtray
  • Lower and uniquely shaped front fender edges
  • Different exhaust mount (side outlet; replaced by Volvo at first service)
  • Seat belts front and rear
  • Manual gearbox with working overdrive – original gearbox, crossmember, cable, and driveshaft included
  • Never fitted with a radio – a rare time capsule
  • Steel wheels with chrome hubcaps
  • Original service book and owner’s manual

Modifications and improvements:

Aftermarket but fully functioning overdrive for comfortable highway driving. Original gearbox and related parts are included for anyone wishing to restore it fully to factory spec. Otherwise, the car is virtually untouched – a very rare original condition for the 140-series.

Condition

Body and exterior:

The body is rust-free and has never required welding. Only two minor paint repairs have been carried out: the left front fender was repainted in the 1970s after a battery explosion, and the left rear fender was repainted in the late 1960s after a parking incident. Overall, the body is straight; small dents are only found on the upper rear section of the rear fender by the trunk lid and a minor one on the hood. Chrome and trim are in very good condition; the underbody is solid and tidy (see pictures).

Interior:

The interior is well-preserved and in very good condition. The driver’s seat has a small repaired section, but otherwise shows no visible damage. No modifications have been made (e.g. for radio installation). All controls, upholstery, headliner, and instruments work and are in fresh condition. Seat belts are fitted both front and rear. All original documentation, including the service and owner’s manuals, has been preserved.

Wheels and tires:

The car sits on steel wheels with chrome hubcaps. Tire depth is approx. 6 mm – in good condition for continued use.

Mechanics and function:

B18 engine (75 hp) in top condition; runs smoothly and always starts “like clockwork.” Brakes have been recently serviced and replaced as needed. The gearbox is well maintained and has been upgraded with a working overdrive for modern driving comfort. Original parts are included.

Service History

The car comes with unusually complete documentation and ownership records. The service book is filled out according to Volvo’s recommended intervals. Previous records, inspection reports, and instructions are included.

Regular service has been performed; the most recent publicly recorded inspection with approved results took place on May 26, 2016. Since then, the vehicle has been used sparingly, mainly during summer months, and continuously serviced and maintained by the current owner. All original documentation remains intact, which is rare.

Summary
