Basic Information and History

The Volvo Amazon was presented in 1956 and became one of the cars that truly established Volvo as a manufacturer outside Sweden's borders. The two-door body variant, internally designated P130, was introduced in 1961 and quickly became the best-selling version. The model designation 121 denoted the simpler equipment level with the B18A, a 1.8-litre four-cylinder pushrod engine with a single carburettor, while the 122S received the twin-carburettor B18D. The Amazon was also the first series-produced car in the world with three-point seatbelts as standard, a solution Volvo introduced as early as 1959. The 1966 model year belongs to the later part of Amazon production, when the cars had received most of the technical updates introduced during the 1960s.

This 1966 Volvo Amazon 121 P130 is Swedish-sold and has an unusually coherent history. The car was bought new in 1966 by the seller's grandfather, Gösta Göransson, and has remained within the same family ever since. Ownership passed on to the seller's father, then to the seller himself around 1986, for a period to the seller's mother while the seller lived in Norway, and since 1991 the seller has once again been the registered owner. In total, there have been 5 owners, all within the Göransson family. The seller has obtained a list of owners from the Swedish Transport Agency.

The odometer reading is 138,120 kilometres and can, according to the seller, be guaranteed. The car is stated to be in original condition. There are no loans on the vehicle and no deductible VAT.

Equipment and Options

  • B18A, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with single carburettor
  • Manual gearbox
  • Two-door P130 body
  • Three-point seatbelts
  • Original condition according to the seller
  • Five summer tyres purchased in 2016, mounted on the original rims

The car has not been modified and is stated to be in original condition. The front wings and front end have been replaced, partly during the 1970s and partly in 2016, and the lower rear sheet metal panels were replaced in 2016. The seller has ordered a new fan belt, a new gear lever gaiter, and new gaskets for the indicator lenses from VP Autoparts, with delivery announced for 3 November 2026.

Condition

Body and exterior: The paint and body are assessed by the seller to be in good condition, with certain reservations. There is minor rust damage at the lower edge of the side doors, somewhat more on the left side than the right, as well as in the paint on the inside of the wheel arches, at and under the bumper on the right side, on a small area on the boot lid and on the inside of the bonnet. There is also some rust in panel seams in certain places and isolated spots with paint damage. The front and rear bumpers have dents. A trim strip is missing on the left rear side and has temporarily been replaced with a strip that is too short, while the original trim, which has become warped, has been kept and is included. The windows are in good condition. The seller notes that the underbody has not been inspected since the 2018 inspection.

Interior: The interior has a number of remarks. The driver's seat is damaged on the left side towards the door, and there is a scratch or a hole in the rear seat. The front door mat is torn and has been reinforced with two rubber mats. The gear lever gaiter is torn at the bottom, but a new one has been ordered. The dashboard has cracks in the front above the gauges and the original paint has flaked. The headliner is stated to be in good condition. The car has heating but no cooling function. The trip meter and all seatbelts function correctly.

Tyres and rims: The car runs on five summer tyres purchased in 2016, mounted on the original rims. The rims have rust damage.

Mechanics and function: The engine, gearbox and brakes are all described as being in good condition. The clutch works and the gearbox shifts flawlessly. However, problems have begun to occur with the fan belt in cold weather, with occasional noise, and during the photographing of the car on Monday 2 November it made an intense noise when revving. A new fan belt has been ordered. The car is drivable as it stands and has passed inspection. Update, 4 November 2026: According to the responsible Bidders Highway representative, the car has been repaired and the engine now starts.

Service History

The car is stated not to be fully serviced, but there are a number of documents in the form of service receipts, repair and workshop receipts, and receipts for purchased parts that document its history. The most recent inspection was carried out on 30 August 2018. In addition, an extensive collection of inspection protocols has been preserved from 1972, 1973, January 1975, December 1975, January 1978, November 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, February 1987, December 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, January 1993, December 1993, 1995, 1997, 2016 and 2018, which gives a good picture of the car's use over the years.

Summary

This 1966 Volvo Amazon 121 P130 is a Swedish-sold car in original condition that has remained within the same family since it was bought new, with a documented odometer reading of 138,120 kilometres. Its running history is corroborated by a large number of inspection protocols and receipts from the 1970s onwards. The car shows clear signs of use in the interior and some rust damage on the body and rims. Noise from the fan belt was noted during photography. According to the responsible Bidders Highway representative, the car has since been repaired and the engine now starts. At the same time, the engine, gearbox and brakes are assessed to be in good condition, and the car is drivable as it stands. For anyone seeking an Amazon with a coherent ownership history and original character, rather than a restored car, this is an object worth a closer look.
