The E-Class is Mercedes' executive saloon, a name made official in 1993 although the line traces back to the 124-series of the mid-1980s. Enthusiasts still rate the 124 highest, especially the coupé and cabriolet fitted with the 24-valve straight-six – the 300 CE-24 and 300 CE-24 Cabriolet. Plainer four-cylinder cars such as the 230 E have their own following, as do the later W210 and W211 in forms like the E320, E 320 T estate, the E 290 TD diesel and the V8-powered E430.
Rust is the main thing to check: wheel arches, front wings, jacking points and tailgate edges on the 124, and far more widely on the W210. Inspect wiring loom insulation on certain early-1990s engines, and test the hood and hydraulics on cabriolets. Documented service history matters.
