Launched in 1996, the SLK was Mercedes' answer to the revived roadster market, its Vario-roof turning a coupé into a convertible in seconds. The first-generation R170 relied on supercharged four-cylinder engines in the SLK 200 Kompressor and SLK 230, while the facelift brought the V6-powered SLK 320 and the much sharper SLK 32 AMG. The R171 that followed in 2004 is best known as the SLK 350 and the V8 SLK 55 AMG, which along with tuner cars such as Kleemann conversions attract the keenest interest among enthusiasts.
On early R170 cars, check carefully for corrosion around the wheel arches, sills and bootlid, and cycle the Vario-roof fully while watching for hydraulic leaks and tired seals.
