Built in Graz since 1979, the G has kept its ladder frame, solid axles and three locking differentials throughout its life. The early W460 and W461 cars were utilitarian machines, sold as 240 GD, 300 GD, 280 GE and 230 GE, while the W463 arrived in 1990 with permanent four-wheel drive and a far more civilised cabin. Enthusiasts tend to chase honest short-wheelbase examples, the V8-powered G 500, the G 400 CDI diesel and the AMG cars.
Rust is the main thing to check: inspect the frame, the body mounts, the sills and the lower edges of the doors. Make sure the diff locks engage and release properly, as the vacuum system tends to leak with age, and treat documented service history on the bigger engines as essential.
