Introduced in 1982 as the W201, the car was Mercedes-Benz's first compact model and stayed in production until 1993. Bruno Sacco's tightly drawn bodywork, the multi-link rear axle and the familiar over-engineered feel gave it a reputation for lasting. Fuel-injected engines run from the 190 E 1.8 up to the six-cylinder 2.6, alongside the famously durable 190 D diesels. Enthusiasts chase the 16-valve 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 developed with Cosworth, and the late Evolution cars most of all, though tidy four-cylinder examples with a manual gearbox have a following of their own.
When buying, check the wheel arches, jacking points and rear screen surround for rust, look for a documented service history, and ask about the wiring harness on early Nineties cars. Browse the Mercedes-Benz 190E cars for sale and sold below, or consign your own.
