Launched in 1997 as the W208, the CLK slotted between the C-Class and E-Class, pairing more modest underpinnings with a body carrying the E-Class twin-headlamp face, always as a two-door coupé or soft-top convertible. The W209 followed in 2002 and ran until 2009. Engines ranged from the supercharged four-cylinder CLK 200 and CLK 230 Kompressor through V6 models such as the CLK 280 and CLK 320, to the V8-powered CLK 500 and CLK 550 and the AMG cars, the CLK 55 and CLK 63. Enthusiasts tend to chase the AMG versions and well-kept convertibles with documented history.
Rust is the W208's known weakness, so check wheel arches, sills, boot lid edges and jacking points. On cabriolets, test the roof hydraulics and seals, and on later M272 V6s the balance shaft gear is worth investigating.
