Basic information and history

Mercedes-Benz 300 CE, internally known as C124, was presented as the coupé version of the popular W124 series and came to be one of the most solidly built passenger cars Mercedes-Benz produced during the 1980s. The body was designed under the leadership of Bruno Sacko and is characterised by the pillarless side, the lowered side skirt and the somewhat shorter wheelbase compared to the sedan. Under the bonnet sits the M103, a 3.0-litre inline-six with a single overhead camshaft and Bosch KE-Jetronic, a naturally aspirated engine known for its long lifespan and smooth running.

This example from 1989 has been rebuilt by Koenig Specials, the Munich-based firm founded by Willy König which during the 1980s became known for its elaborate conversions of primarily Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari models. Koenig cars were generally based on widened bodies, bespoke aerodynamic details and special wheels, and were sold in small series to customers wanting something more pronounced than the original. A Koenig-built 300 CE is therefore a considerably rarer sight than a standard car of the same model year.
