The M5 is the Motorsport division's take on the 5 Series: a four-door saloon with performance on par with the sports cars of its day. The early-1990s E34 uses the hand-built S38 straight-six, and the 3.8-litre manual cars are the ones collectors chase hardest. Its successor, the E39 (1998–2003), moved to the S62 V8 and was sold only with a six-speed manual gearbox, which is a large part of why it remains one of the most sought-after sports saloons of its era; later LCI cars are identified by revised lighting and detail changes.

When buying, documented service history matters more than mileage, as both engines are expensive to put right. Check the wheel arches, sills and jacking points for rust, listen for noise from the VANOS and valvetrain, and assess the cooling system. To buy or sell a BMW M5, put it through auction on Bidders Highway.
