The 5 Series has been BMW's mid-size car since 1972, running from the sharp-edged E12 through the E28 and E34 to the E39, the last of the line to feel properly analogue. Enthusiasts tend to chase the straight-sixes — 525i and 535i in E28 and E34 form, ideally with M-Technic trim — while the V8-powered 540i, especially as a Touring, has become a collectible in its own right. Humbler 518 and 520i cars were once everyday transport, and tidy originals are getting scarce; the 525 tds diesel has its own following.
Check wheel arches, sills and jacking points for rust on the older generations.
