Since the mid-1970s the 3 Series has been BMW's compact saloon, running through the E21, E30, E36, E46 and E90 generations. Enthusiast interest tends to follow the straight-six cars: the E30 325i in saloon, coupé and convertible form, the four-wheel-drive 325iX, and later the E46 330Ci. Tidy 320i examples and limited editions have their own following, as do the cabriolets, which were cheap for years and often used hard.
On older cars rust is the main concern – check the wheel arches, sills, strut towers and jacking points. The M20 engines need their timing belt kept current, while on the E46 it is worth inspecting the rear subframe mounting area in the floorpan and the plastic parts in the cooling system.
