Launched in 1995, the Z3 was BMW's first modern two-seat roadster and the first car built at the company's Spartanburg plant in the United States, sharing much of its engineering with the E36. Engines ran from the four-cylinder 1.8 and 1.9 up to a range of straight-sixes, and it is the sixes that enthusiasts chase hardest: the 2.8 Roadster, the later 3.0, and of course the M Roadster and the hatchback-shaped M Coupé. The 1999 facelift brought a wider rear track and revised rear styling, while early 1.9i cars remain the affordable way in.
When viewing a BMW Z3 for sale, check the rear subframe mounting points in the floorpan for cracks, and look for corrosion in the sills, arches and around the rear lights.
