The M3 arrived in 1986 as a Group A homologation car and has reinvented itself with each generation: straight-six power in the E36 and E46, a high-revving V8 in the E90/E92/E93, and a twin-turbo six in the F80. Enthusiasts tend to rate the E46 highly, especially in manual form, while the original E30 has long been firmly established as a collector's car. Later special editions such as the M3 Competition 30 Jahre have their own following, and M3 Coupé and M3 Cabriolet examples from the mid-nineties onwards turn up regularly.
When buying, rod bearings on the E46 and the V8 cars are a well-known checkpoint, as are corrosion and cracking around the rear subframe mounts on older shells, convertible roof operation and the condition of SMG gearboxes.
