Launched in 1989, the E31 replaced the E24 6 Series as BMW's flagship coupé: frameless side glass, pop-up headlights and more electronics than almost anything else on the road at the time. The 850i arrived with a 5.0-litre V12, later renamed 850Ci, while the V8-powered 840Ci broadened the range in the mid-1990s and the 850CSi sits at the top of the tree. Enthusiasts pay the strongest money for early V12 cars with the six-speed manual gearbox, though a sorted 840Ci is the easier car to live with. Cars passing through our listings have mostly been early-to-mid-1990s examples badged 850i, 850iA and 840Ci.
