The SL name has covered open Mercedes since the mid-1950s, from the 190 SL and 300 SL through the W113 Pagoda in 230, 250 and 280 SL form, to the long-running R107 with its 350 SL, 450 SL, 380 SL and 560 SL. The R129 followed, with the SL 500 at the heart of the range, and then the R230, including hot versions such as the SL 55 AMG. Early Pagodas, well-kept 190 SLs and late, low-mileage R107s tend to attract the strongest interest, though later cars now have a following of their own.
On older examples, rust is the main concern: check sills, wheel arches, floors and the area around the battery box, and remember that a half-finished restoration usually costs more than a sorted car. On newer generations, soft-top hydraulics and suspension leaks deserve a careful test drive. Buying or selling a Mercedes-Benz SL starts with the listings below.
