Launched in 1961 and built until 1975, it began with the 3.8-litre XK six, moved to 4.2 litres in 1964 and ended with the V12 of the Series III. Enthusiasts tend to rank the Series I highest, especially early 3.8 cars with covered headlights and external bonnet latches, while the 4.2 coupé is often seen as the best balance of torque and usability. The V12 2+2 Series III has long been the more affordable way in, with a famously smooth engine.
