Known at home in Sweden as the Bubbla, the Type 1 ran for more than six decades and became one of the most widely built cars ever: rear-mounted air-cooled flat-four, rear-wheel drive and mechanicals simple enough to work on in your own garage. Early 1950s and 60s cars with small rear windows and generous chrome sit at the top of the market, while the 1302 S and 1303 S, with MacPherson front suspension and the curved windscreen, have a following of their own. The Karmann-built convertibles, such as the 1303 LS and the 1600 Cabriolet, are among the most sought after.
Rust is the main thing to judge: check the heater channels, floor pans, spare wheel well and the battery area under the rear seat, and on open cars the hood frame and its mountings. Matching numbers and original trim usually matter more than fresh paint. Buying or selling a Beetle is straightforward through a Bidders Highway auction.
