Basic information and history
The Volkswagen 1302 was introduced in the autumn of 1970 as a further development of the classic Type 1 and represented the biggest technical change since the model's inception. It received an entirely new front end with MacPherson struts instead of the traditional torsion-bar front suspension, which gave a considerably larger front luggage compartment, as well as a rear end with double-jointed drive axles that noticeably improved the handling. The designation 1302 S denotes the larger air-cooled flat-four of 1,584 cubic centimetres with 50 horsepower, front disc brakes and a top speed of around 130 km/h. The 1302 was produced for only two model years before being replaced by the 1303 with its curved windscreen, making the 1972 model year the last of its kind.
The Cabriolet version was, like earlier open-top Beetles, built by Karmann in Osnabrück. It is characterised by its heavily padded convertible top with glass rear window, the extra body reinforcements, and the distinctive high profile of the folded top. The Cabriolet was a considerably more expensive car than the closed 1302 S and was sold in significantly smaller numbers, which has contributed to it being a sought-after collector's car today.
This Volkswagen 1302 S Cabriolet of 1972 model year has, according to the Swedish Transport Agency, had a total of 13 owners. The odometer reading is 21,193 kilometres but cannot be guaranteed by the seller.
