Basic information and history

The Volkswagen 1200, model year 1959, is one of the most recognizable versions of the Type 1. It combines the simplicity of the early design with the maturity that came in the late 50s. The air-cooled boxer engine of 1192 cm³, 6-volt electrical system and the characteristic swing axle at the rear provide the driving feel and character that has made the model loved by enthusiasts. The 1959 cars left the factory without a fuel gauge and with drum brakes all around, and many examples have been updated with period-appropriate improvements during their lifetime.

The current example is a rare find that was put aside during the 70s. In 1983 it was brought out again, inspected, given a new registration number and then put away again already in 1985. Now this little gem has been gently brought back to life! The odometer reading is stated at 10,163 km and is guaranteed by the seller. According to the accompanying documentation, there is a long Swedish history since at least 1966 when the car was bought for 600 SEK by a man named Eilert. It was mostly Eilert's wife who used the car during the 60s and the car was mostly unused during the 70s until 1983. Then it was brought out, inspected and given its new registration number: LPG481. It was not driven much after all because in April 1985 the car was parked in the loft in a barn on the plain of Västergötland. The car remained there until 2023 when the current owner was able to purchase it. The current owner is the second user of the current registration number LPG481, and the seller estimates that the car has had a total of about three users in addition to any dealers.

In the late 1960s, the car was updated with a larger fuel tank and thus also a fuel gauge. It also received newer taillights, license plate lighting on the engine compartment lid and front turn signals. The car was brought out again in 1983 for inspection and was then given its current registration number. It was then put aside on 1 April 1985 and brought out in 2023, when the seller took steps to get it started, working and inspected. This is an honest, patinated example with a well-documented history and a clear time capsule feel.

Condition

Body and exterior : The paint is heavily patinated with a matte finish, surface rust and clear marks all around. According to the seller, there are no major dents, rather wear after long storage. Rust is present in several places, mostly on the left front fender, at the bottom of the B-pillar and in front of the rear wheels where it appears to have been repaired or touch-up painted previously. All rubber strips are dry. Glass is reported to be good without any complaints. Chrome, strips, headlight lenses and emblems are intact and presentable but not new.

Interior : Original interior from 1959 according to the seller. Contemporary patina with discoloration compared to new. The backrest of one chair has a cracked seam at the top in the middle. The dashboard has surface rust from storage. The headliner is generally fine but has a few small holes, probably from pests. The steering wheel is fine, one control is missing.

Tires and rims : Tires are estimated to be at least 50 years old. They show some dry cracking but have tread remaining and the car has passed inspection with these tires according to the seller. Replacement is recommended for active driving.

Mechanics and function : The engine starts and runs but runs a bit greasy. The seller notes play in the crank, which means that a replacement engine may be something to consider in the long term, although it may be tough for a long time. The gearbox works but the first gear sync is said to be a bit poor. The brake system has been overhauled with new hoses, wheel cylinders and master cylinder and is considered to be working well. There is no interior heating as the heating chambers have been replaced by pipes. The radio is present but not connected.

The car is presented here in its honest condition and bidders should study the pictures carefully.

Service history

Extensive documentation accompanies the car according to the seller. This includes documents from 1966 when Eilert bought the car for 600 SEK, receipts for purchases and parts, older inspection reports and notes until the car was put on standby. The car was used minimally during the 70s and was brought out in 1983 when it received its new registration number, but was put on standby again in 1985. The Beetle then ended up in a loft in a barn on the Västgötaslätten plain. The car was brought out in 2023 and the seller has then carried out the necessary measures for starting, functioning and inspection. Brake components have been replaced and the car is being sold with new oil in the engine.

Current documentation provides a clear picture of the car's Swedish usage history since the mid-1960s.

Physical inspection of documents and car is recommended for those who want to go into detail.

Summary

An honest and well-preserved Volkswagen 1200 from 1960 with a clear patina, a long Swedish history since at least 1966 and extensive documentation. The car has period-correct updates with a larger tank and fuel gauge, later lighting details and a revised brake system. The mechanics are drivable but with noted remarks such as play in the crank and weak synchronization on the first and the lack of cabin heating.

This is a real barn find that has just been brought back to life. For the enthusiast who appreciates the original feel and patina and who wants to continue preserving or gradually renovate. A charming starting point with the right charisma and a story that goes with the car.

Finns massor på bilderna som pekar mot att det inte är en 59:a. Verkar vara en 64:a som senast.

  • PetoxFebruary 24, 2026 17:07

    Alltså inte äldre än 1964.

Hej. Vad jag förstått det som är detta en bil från 1959 men 1960 års modell. 1959 bytte vw modellår redan i augusti.
