Launched in 1964, the Mustang created the pony car class: a light, long-bonnet coupé offered with everything from a straight six to big-capacity V8s, and sold as hardtop, fastback and convertible. The 1965–1973 cars remain the collector's heartland, with the Fastback, Mach 1 and Boss 302 at the top of most want lists, followed by honest convertibles and GT cars with the right engine code. Later generations have their own following, particularly the retro-styled models from 2005 onwards, where GT Convertibles and V6 Convertibles turn up regularly.
When buying, rust does most of the damage: check floors, torque boxes, shock towers, frame rails and the lower rear quarters. Verify the engine code in the VIN and the data plate against the description, as rebodied Mach 1 and Boss tributes exist.
