Launched in 1982 as a properly developed successor to the 924, it combined its own four-cylinder engine with a rear-mounted gearbox for balanced handling, and stayed in production until 1991. The range grew from the early 2.5-litre cars to the 944 Turbo, the 16-valve S models and the final three-litre S2, which was also offered as a cabriolet. Turbo and S2 cars tend to attract the most attention among enthusiasts, although well-kept early examples and Targa-bodied cars have become steadily harder to find.
Service history matters more than mileage here: the cam and balance shaft belts need replacing at set intervals, and a skipped change can be expensive. Check the sills, floors and torsion bar tube for corrosion, and listen for a tired clutch or transaxle. Browse the Porsche 944 cars for sale below, or consign your own to auction with Bidders Highway.
