Built since the mid-1960s around the same idea – a flat-six behind the rear axle, 2+2 bodywork and a profile that has survived every generation – the 911 is the benchmark classic sports car. Air-cooled examples such as the early 2.2 S, the 911 T, the SC, the 3.2 Carrera and the Targa remain the first stop for most collectors, with the 930 Turbo at the top of the tree, while water-cooled 996 and 997 cars have long been the more accessible way in.
