The GTO arrived in 1964 as an option package on the Tempest/LeMans: a big V8 in a mid-size body, a formula that quickly set the template for American performance cars. The first generation through 1967 is often seen as the purest take, while the curvier 1968–1972 cars with their body-colour Endura nose have a strong following of their own, especially in The Judge specification. Ram Air engines, the early-1970s 455 HO and the convertibles, built in far smaller numbers than the hardtops, draw the keenest interest.
