Launched in 1974 as the Beetle's replacement, the Giugiaro-styled Golf became one of Europe's defining cars, and the GTI gave the hot hatch its template. Each generation has its own following: the robust, simply engineered Mk2, including the raised four-wheel-drive Golf Country; the smooth narrow-angle VR6; the Mk4 R32 with its six-cylinder engine and 4Motion drivetrain; and the Karmann-built Cabriolet, which stayed in production long after its hatchback siblings were replaced. Among newer cars, track-focused versions such as the GTI Clubsport S draw the most attention.
On older examples, rust is the main thing to check: wheel arches, sills, the base of the windscreen and, on convertibles, the A-pillars and hood mountings.
