Built in Trollhättan from 1960 to 1980, the 96 refined the aerodynamic shape of the earlier 93 with a larger rear window and a unitary body. Early cars use the 841 cc three-cylinder two-stroke, while those from 1967 onwards carry Ford's 1.5-litre V4. Rally success with Erik Carlsson at the wheel gave the model a standing few small Swedish cars can match. Enthusiasts tend to chase the early two-strokes and the sporting versions, while the 96 V4, de Luxe and GL are the ones most often driven regularly.

Rust is the main concern when buying: check sills, floors, front suspension mountings and the area around the rear axle, and look for signs of earlier patch repairs. Try the freewheel, listen for uneven running and study the service history, especially lubrication on two-stroke cars. Bid on or consign a Saab 96 through Bidders Highway.
