Basic information and history

The SAAB 96 V4 from 1972 represents a defining era in Swedish automotive history. The compact body design and robust V4 engine make this one of the most iconic SAAB models. 1972 has also been a pivotal year for the V4 model, as the quality of detail and rail-like road feel merge with the classic two-stroke heritage from previous generations.

This car was sold in Sweden and has 118,480 km on the odometer according to the seller. During the period 1993–2022 the car was used in Norrbotten, which gave it a solid Norrland provenance. Six users have managed the car, the most recent of which bought it near the in-laws' cottage in Tornedalen and took it home to the west coast via car train through Finland without any problems – a pleasant curiosity that underlines the car's reliability.

The car comes with a driving record from 1993 to 2008. The record is detailed from 1993 to 1998; the odometer hit 100,000 km in 1995, and according to documentation and inspections, the car has since been driven only 1,848 km. There is no documentation between 1972 and 1993 and the seller cannot guarantee that the total mileage is 118,480 km.

This item is now being sold at auction with no reserve price – exclusively on Bidders Highway.

Equipment and options

  • Original V4 engine (Ford 1.5L, 65 hp)
  • Front seats, rear seat, door sides and carpet from 1974 model (very good condition)
  • Original instrument cluster
  • Driving log (1993-2008)
  • New summer tires (installed summer 2023 – only driven about 100 kilometers)
  • Original rims
  • Engine heater – unclear function
  • Stereo – unclear function as there are no speakers in the car
  • One set of keys
  • Inspection exempt
Modifications/improvements: Interior textiles and panels replaced with copies from a -74 for a better overall impression as the original ones have become sun-bleached and worn. The gas tank has been removed and cleaned ( 2022 ), new fuel filter. The clutch master cylinder has been honed and the gasket has been replaced ( 2023 ). One of the rims has been repainted black. Otherwise, essentially original.

Condition

Body and exterior condition: The body bears traces of Norrbotten's gravel roads: a lot of stone chips on the hood and front, scratches and paint chips on the right rear under the taillight and under the fuel cap and on certain parts of the hood (after over-polishing). Relatively rough scratches on the right door, scratch on the roof. Rust spots at the bottom of the doors (not continuous), minor rust around the wheel arch edges, front turn signals and emblem. Worn side emblems (C-pillars), repair on the right turn signal glass, some minor dents on the rear bumper. Glass is in good condition. Passenger door cannot be locked with a key, but can be locked from the inside. Driver's door and luggage compartment can be locked with a key.

Interior: Good condition. Seats, door panels and carpet from -74 and in excellent condition, except for a 1 cm tear on the left side of the driver's seat and a crack under the storage compartment on the dashboard. The headliner is good but has a 15 cm tear above the right rear seat. Steering wheel, controls and buttons in working order and fully functional. The stereo lights up when you start it but there are no speakers, so it has not been functionally tested.

Tires and rims: New summer tires from 2023, driven max 100 km. Rims in original condition, one has been painted black, the others have surface rust but no structural damage.

Mechanics and function: The engine works fine and is stable at idle, although it starts a bit slowly when cold. Brakes have not needed any action since the last service, but it may be time for an overhaul. The gearbox and drivetrain work, but the second gear sounds a little different. The fourth gear rarely wants to engage when driving with a freewheel, but works better after changing the oil in the gearbox (it is recommended to drive without a freewheel).

Accessories: Includes new chrome strips for windshield and rear window. Not mounted. Spare wheel and jack included. Probably original.
