Descended directly from the original Series Land Rovers, the Defender carried that name from 1990 until production at Solihull ended in early 2016, keeping its ladder chassis, beam axles and aluminium panels largely intact throughout. Enthusiasts tend to chase the short-wheelbase 90, the 110 Station Wagon and the working bodies: Hard Top, Single Cab and pickup. The five-cylinder Td5 of the late 1990s and early 2000s is valued for its torque and drivability, while the final Puma-engined cars appeal for their six-speed gearbox and more civilised cabin.
