Basic information and history
The Land Rover Defender 90 is the short-wheelbase version of the model that was named Defender in 1990, which in turn builds further on the concept from the Series vehicles and the earlier Ninety. During the second half of the 1990s, civilian Defenders were powered by the four-cylinder 300 Tdi diesel, an in-line four-stroke engine with turbo and intercooler, which in 1998 was replaced by the Td5. The Hard Top configuration means a closed steel body without side windows at the rear, making the Defender 90 a compact and robust utility vehicle with permanent four-wheel drive, low range and differential lock.
This example, however, is not an ordinary civilian Defender. According to the seller, it is a Defender Wolf 90, i.e. the reinforced military version that was delivered to the British Ministry of Defence during the second half of the 1990s. The Wolf retained the 300 Tdi engine instead of the Td5 and was equipped with a 24-volt electrical system along with a number of reinforcements compared to civilian vehicles.
The seller states that this is most likely the only Defender Wolf 90 in Sweden.
According to the seller, the car was used by the Ministry of Defence School of Transport between 1997 and 2012, after which it was sold by Witham Specialist Vehicles to an owner in southern Germany who used the car very sparingly. In 2024 it was purchased by the current owner and imported to Sweden. The vehicle has had a total of 3 owners. The odometer reading is 81,761 km, which cannot, however, be guaranteed by the seller. There is no deductible VAT on the vehicle and no outstanding loans.

Apart from the military Wolf specification, the car is stated to be in original condition, with a few minor modifications. Ahead of the sale in 2024, the drivetrain and fuel system were mechanically overhauled in Germany, and the car was fitted with new tyres.
The current owner has carefully converted the car to left-hand drive, using correct parts with respect for the original configuration. The rear spare wheel carrier is an aftermarket addition, but fitted in a way that has not damaged the body. The original is available and can easily be restored. A weapon rack is also included.
Condition
Both the paint and body are described by the seller as being in good condition, as are the windows. The car is stated to be in original condition.
The interior is stated to be in good condition, as are the dashboard and headliner. All seatbelts function and the dashboard is free of warning lights. The climate system, trip meter and all other electronics are stated to be working.
The tyres and rims are in good condition according to the seller, and the tyres have recently been replaced.
Mechanically, the engine is described as being in good condition and starts and runs faultlessly. The gearbox is stated to be in good condition and shifts faultlessly, the clutch works, and the brakes are stated to be in good condition. The drivetrain and fuel system were mechanically overhauled in Germany in 2024. The car is ready to drive as it stands and has passed inspection, most recently carried out on 2024-11-04.
Service history
According to the seller, the vehicle is fully serviced. However, receipts and documentation substantiating the service history are lacking. The most recent major work the seller describes is the mechanical overhaul of the drivetrain and fuel system carried out in Germany ahead of the 2024 sale, during which the car also received new tyres.
Summary
This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 Hard Top in Wolf configuration is an unusual example with a documented background within the British Ministry of Defence, where according to the seller it was used by the Ministry of Defence School of Transport until 2012. Thereafter, the car was used sparingly by an owner in Germany before being imported to Sweden in 2024. With its 300 Tdi engine, 24-volt electrical system and the reinforcements that characterise the Wolf version, combined with an odometer reading of 81,761 km, good condition throughout according to the seller, and a recently completed mechanical overhaul of the drivetrain and fuel system, this represents an interesting opportunity for anyone seeking a Defender out of the ordinary.
