The reputation was made by the two-stroke triples, the H1 and H2, notorious for their savage acceleration, and confirmed in 1972 by the Z1 900, the four-cylinder four-stroke that put the marque at the front of the big Japanese machines. Smaller fours of the period, such as the KZ650, are now regarded as some of the best-balanced everyday bikes of their day. The GPZ900R of 1984 introduced the Ninja name, a family that still defines the brand, and the 1990s brought the ZXR 750, the fast ZZR models and the approachable parallel-twin EX500.
