Basic information and history

Kawasaki's GPZ series represents a time when Japanese manufacturers were stepping up their game in terms of performance, and for Kawasaki it was important to reclaim the crown as the manufacturer with the best superbike. This ZX1100 marks the end of the big air-cooled inline-fours, before water-cooling took over the sports segment, but for increased rideability Kawasaki opted for electronic fuel injection instead of carburettors. The model is as famous for its strong performance as for its sleek silhouette; these GPZs were often called "the track" due to their long and narrow shape.

This example has 66,953 km on the odometer. Unfortunately, the history of previous users is not known, but the seller states that the motorcycle has been extremely pleasant as a road bike and that the fuel injection works excellently and significantly improves the rideability. The machine has probably been repainted at some point in the past and has a unique color, something that has contributed to its distinctive character and why it was chosen by the current owner.

The motorcycle has been characterized by enthusiasm and continuous maintenance since its early days. It is now considered a classic, and is both tax and inspection exempt .

Equipment and options

  • Electronic fuel injection (original)
  • Repainted
  • Steel braided brake hoses
  • Refurbished brake cylinder (new gaskets)
  • New tires

The motorcycle has been kept mostly original, except for the repainted bodywork. The current color scheme is probably not completely factory-correct but carries a personal expression, which according to the seller gives both character and a unique bike. Mechanical improvements include a renovated top with new piston rings, honed cylinders, new timing chain and timing chain tensioner and adjusted camshafts. The brake system is upgraded with new, steel-braided hoses and a refurbished brake cylinder.

      Condition

Body and exterior condition: The paint is generally fine but shows traces of use with natural marks that should be examined on the image material. Probably repainted by previous owners, where both finish and workmanship can be considered professional. No rust or damage to the frame has been reported. Glass sections and headlight lenses are in good condition, and there is no classic chrome apart from the exhaust system which is in black anodized style. Controls and buttons work well but have a patina in the form of slightly dull plastic, typical of the age.

Tires and rims: Current tires were fitted by the previous owner and are in good condition. No complaints on the rims reported but see pictures for your own assessment.

Mechanics and function: Extensive engine renovation has recently been carried out by the workshop. The cylinder head has been dismantled and fitted with new piston rings and the cylinder bores honed. The timing chain and timing chain tensioner have been replaced, as well as a defective camshaft cover. Valves have been checked and the clearance has been adjusted. The engine is reported to pull nicely and feel strong, especially after 2000 rpm. The gearbox and driveline work excellently. The brakes are in good condition after replacing hoses and renovating the master cylinder.

      Service history

Documentation from previous owners is missing, but current papers and receipts from the current time are available. The last known service was performed on September 6, 2024 at 66,740 km, when the oil, oil filter and timing chain were adjusted. Unfortunately, the service book is not complete, but service has been performed according to the owner's description and in line with the manufacturer's recommendations. The motorcycle is both tax and inspection exempt and was inspected with a passing result on 2023-02-22.

      Summary

This is a well-maintained Kawasaki ZX1100 GPZ from 1984, a classic sports motorcycle that belongs to the last great air-cooled inline-fours. The highlights are the machine's well-documented improvements to the engine and brakes as well as its personal and appealing color. For those looking for a fun-to-drive, strong and genuine 80s Kawasaki in unique condition, this example offers a very high use value and a genuine sense of Japanese engineering.
