Introduced in 1984, the Softail frame gave Harley the rigid-looking lines of a 1950s bike while hiding its shock absorbers beneath the gearbox. Evolution-engined machines built up to 1999 are often the ones enthusiasts chase, while bikes from 2000 on use the counterbalanced Twin Cam 88B. The best-known variants include the FLSTF Fat Boy with its solid disc wheels, the Heritage Softail Classic with screen and leather bags, and the leaner FXST Softail Standard and FXST Custom.

When buying, check that frame and engine numbers match the paperwork, look for oil seepage around the cylinder bases and primary cover on Evo motors, and listen for worn cam chain tensioners on early Twin Cams. Many have been customised, so ask whether the original parts come with the bike. Buying or selling a Softail is straightforward through the auctions here at Bidders Highway.
