Basic information and history
The Honda Gold Wing GL 1000 marks the beginning of a legendary series of touring motorcycles that quickly set new standards for comfort and performance. With its groundbreaking liquid-cooled boxer engine, shaft drive and innovative solutions, the GL 1000 quickly became an icon among motorcycle enthusiasts and is still considered a milestone in motorcycle history.
This example has an odometer reading of 92,787 km. Information on the number of previous users is unfortunately missing, but the bike is an interesting and untouched original in used condition with a clear patina. Among the model's technical highlights are the fuel tank placed under the saddle for optimal weight distribution, as well as reliable prop shaft drive.
The motorcycle is completely original with no modifications or renovations, but has been well cared for to maintain its reliability. For those looking for a preserved GL 1000 to use, renovate or upgrade, this is an interesting starting point. It is notable that the chromed strut behind the seat is missing, as can be seen in the pictures.
Equipment and options
- Prop shaft drive
- Liquid-cooled boxer engine
- Original instrumentation and controls
The motorcycle is in an original condition. The rear brake cylinder has been replaced and refurbished, which is an unusually hard-to-find part as it was only used on the Gold Wing and the CB750 during the years 1974–75. No other known improvements have been made, and the bike is in working condition with potential for further detailed refurbishment.
Condition
Body and exterior condition: The bike shows used condition with patina. There are scuffs and marks that are visible in the pictures. In addition, a little incipient rust is noted on the original muffler, but without holes. Some chrome mouldings and light frames need an aesthetic overhaul, while the rest of the chrome is generally in good condition. The only thing missing is the chrome bar behind the saddle. Controls and buttons work as they should.
Tires and rims: The tread depth is approved, but the tyres' age is unknown. For future use, it is recommended to change to fresh tires.
Mechanics and function: The engine runs smoothly and evenly and is known for its pleasant and vibration-free running, but the coolant creeps out when stationary. The neutral position light does not go out when shifting, probably due to a defective sensor. The front brake is weak and the master brake cylinder should be renovated; brake hoses should also be replaced with steel-braided ones. The gearbox and driveline work but the clutch may need to be overhauled given its age. Extra bearings for the timing belt tensioner are included.
Service history
Latest service: After purchase in 2022, a start-up service was performed at MotoMate in Motala when the oil, oil filter, spark plugs and battery were changed.
There is no service book or older documentation, only service records and receipts from the current owner. The last approved inspection was carried out on 2017-07-20, but since the vehicle is now over 40 years old, it is exempt from inspection.
No documented renovations have been carried out beyond the replacement and renovation of the rear brake cylinder.
Summary
For the knowledgeable enthusiast, this 1976 Honda Gold Wing GL 1000 is a possible basis for a future renovation or to keep as a charming original with a period patina. Mechanically, the bike needs to be overhauled to be safe to drive in traffic. An interesting and almost complete Gold Wing with classic features and potential to be further preserved or refined.
