Basic Information and History

1966 was the final model year for the fourth-generation Ford Thunderbird, known as the “Town Hardtop.” A year that marked the peak of the Thunderbird’s classic lines, with a design defined by sophistication and period elegance. This example was imported from the USA and was first registered in Sweden on May 31, 1996. Since then, according to the Swedish Transport Agency, the car has had 15 registered owners (including dealers). The car has been upgraded with modern fuel and ignition systems for improved reliability and driving pleasure. The cooling system has been enhanced with an aluminum radiator and electric fan. The chrome American Racing–style wheels add further character to the car’s lines. The towbar is conveniently detachable. All improvements have been made to increase comfort and safety without compromising the original feel.

Condition

Body and Exterior

The Dark Green Metallic paint is in good condition; waxing provides excellent water beading. Minor scratches and imperfections are present (see photos). A small scrape in the paint is visible on the left rear below the Thunderbird emblem. Cracks in the taillight lens are noted. All glass is intact and free from chips or cracks. Chrome trim is relatively modest for this model: front and rear bumpers are in good condition, but the decorative strip below the C-pillar shows typical “US pitting,” and the door handles are acceptable but not perfect.

Interior

Unique Gold and Pearl vinyl interior in good condition. The dashboard and steering wheel are intact, free from cracks or defects, which is rare for these model years. The right door lock pin is defective; the door must be locked from the outside. The panel near the handbrake has a crack. Weak points in the interior include a crack in the right front seat and one in the rear seat (both glued to prevent further damage). The headliner is flawless. All buttons, controls, and gauges work except for the clock and the low fuel warning light. Manual adjustment of the left side mirror does not function. Minor imperfections are present (see photos for reference).

Wheels and Tires

Chrome 5-spoke wheels in very good condition. Rear tires are nearly new, but the front tires are worn and should be replaced soon.

Mechanics and Function

The engine starts easily, runs very well, and idles steadily. No known leaks. Starter motor and ring gear are new. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and without noise. Front brakes function evenly and well, but the rear brakes appear somewhat uneven (right rear better than left). The car voluntarily underwent a vintage car inspection in 2025 with five notes recorded (see Service).

Service History

No service booklet is available, which is typical for imported American classics. Ongoing maintenance has likely been performed by previous owners. For the current owner, the following work is noted: replacement of the right door window motor, as well as a new starter motor and ring gear. Receipts are available for these jobs.

Last approved inspection at the Swedish Transport Agency: 2018-05-10. Most recent vintage car inspection performed in April 2025 at OPUS with the following notes:

1. Warning triangle missing (rectified)
2. Rear brake performance uneven (not deemed necessary to repair by Ford mechanic)
3. CO level at idle 5.5 (limit 4.5)
4. Rear brake hose damaged
5. Front wheel bearings loose (very slight play according to mechanic, no action taken)

Included are the original owner’s manual, workshop manual, and the long-sought-after Edelbrock carburetor handbook.
