The R-series covers BMW's boxer twins, running from the air-cooled airheads of the /5, /6 and /7 era through to today's machines. The late 1970s brought the fully faired R 100 RS and the plainer R 80/7, while the R 80 G/S of 1980 effectively created the adventure class and remains one of the most sought-after models among collectors. The oilhead engine arrived in 1993 in bikes such as the R1100R, and the 2000s added the sportier R1200S alongside touring mainstays like the R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 RT.
When buying, check the driveshaft splines and their lubrication, look for leaks from the final drive and gearbox, and inspect older bikes for corrosion on wheels, brackets and exhaust systems.
