The Kadett was Opel's compact car for several decades, beginning with the small rear-wheel-drive A of the early 1960s and ending with the E generation, built until 1991. Enthusiast interest centres on the sporting versions: the Kadett B Rallye with its 1.9-litre engine, the Kadett C coupé and GT/E, and from the E generation the GSi and the Bertone-built convertible. Plainer cars such as the Kadett Fun and the various SR trims have become scarce in unmodified condition.
Rust is the main concern whatever the year, so check sills, wheel arches, suspension turrets and the floors beneath the carpets. Body panels and interior trim for the sporting models are hard to source, which usually makes a complete, honest car a better buy than a cheap project.
