The Cooper name comes from racing constructor John Cooper, who in the early 1960s turned Alec Issigonis's tiny front-wheel-drive Mini into a giant-killer on road and rally stage. That recipe carried over when BMW relaunched the brand in 2001, and among enthusiasts the Cooper S and John Cooper Works versions carry the most weight, alongside open cars such as the Cooper Cabriolet and Cooper SD Roadster.
On the older cars, corrosion is the main concern: floors, sills, rear wheel arches and subframe mountings reward a close look, and a documented restoration usually counts for more than the odometer. On later models, listen for timing chain rattle on a cold start and check service records on the turbocharged and supercharged engines.
