Launched in 1989, it revived the lightweight British roadster formula with Japanese reliability: rear-wheel drive, modest weight and one of the best gearshifts ever fitted to a production car. The pop-up-headlight NA remains the collectors' choice, particularly honest 1.6 cars; the NB sharpened the package, the NC introduced a folding hardtop, and the current ND — including the MX-5 RF with its targa-style roof — returned to the original's compact proportions.
