Launched in 1986 as the replacement for the CJ-7, the Wrangler has stuck with a ladder frame, live axles and a removable roof ever since. The first-generation YJ is the one with square headlights, offered with the 2.5-litre four or the durable 4.0-litre straight-six and in special editions such as the Islander. The TJ of 1997 brought back round lamps and added coil springs, while the JK introduced the four-door Unlimited body from 2007. Enthusiasts tend to chase well-kept 4.0 cars, limited editions and Rubicon models.
When buying, start with the frame: rear rails, spring hangers and body mounts are the usual rust areas. Also look for signs of hard off-road use, tired steering and suspension parts, and leaks around the soft top and windscreen frame.
