Basic information and History

Rare domestically sold Mercedes-Benz 190 DC Safari that has been stripped down to be renovated. The car is completely free from rust and has had no previous removal carried out. Meter reading according to trip is 88107km, but the owner says that this cannot be confirmed. Only 3 previous owners. This is the more exclusive stationwagon we can thank Philipson Automobil AB for!

  • Domestically sold 1965 Mercedez-Benz 190DC Safari
  • 1 of 16 copies in Sweden
  • Rare opportunity for an exciting project

The Mercedes-Benz W110 Safari, also called Universal, is a stationwagon version built by coachbuilder IMA in Belgium. Swedish importer Philipson, unlike the Germans, was convinced that there was a market in Sweden for a more exclusive stationwagon. According to the data, there are currently 16 cars in Sweden. This particular one was one of the first to roll out of the factory as it was manufactured already in 1964.

Unfortunately, papers with production numbers from body manufacturer IMA disappeared when production was shut down. What has been found is Mercedes-Benz documentation which states that the 2754 chassis was sent to IMA in Belgium. It is not certain that all were built and delivered to the customer. It is therefore estimated that there are less than 2,500 Safaris today.

Condition

The car comes in a rare unrestored but free from rust-condition. Few Safaris have survived rust for such a long time. The car is sold as a project and what remains is assembly, according to the owner. Assuming you don't want to take the opportunity to put new paint on the car. Current paintwork is old with minor scratches and scuff marks.

When taken down, welding and assembly of healthy body parts has been done. According to the current seller, almost all of the parts for the renovation are available. Installed today is an engine from a 200D from 1966, but the original engine is included with the project. Original engine is disassembled and comes in parts. Current engine is described as good but requires fitting of associated mechanical parts.

Dashboard and panel are described as being in good condition. Seating has wear. Inner roof is dismantled but of course included in the purchase. Last inspection took place in 1985.

Summary
An incredible chance to acquire a stainless and unrestored Safari from the 60s. The Safari-version is very rare today and the occasions when on of these are for sale are seldom!
