Basic information and history
The Volvo 850R is Volvo's classic performance sedan from the 1990s, known for combining powerful performance with uncompromising comfort and quality. This particular example, a 1996 Volvo 850R (854-502 R) , is of particular interest to collectors and enthusiasts due to its unusual original specification and unique history.
The car is Swedish-sold and was delivered from the factory in a very unusual turquoise color ( color code 422 ), which is a rare choice for the model. Originally it had a light/beige interior ( upholstery code 3865 ), but after an engine compartment fire in 2003 the car was completely renovated and repainted to Volvo's iconic Saffron metallic (which it has today). At the same time the interior was changed to a dark/black version ( upholstery code 3875 ).
According to the seller, there are very few remaining 850R sedans in Sweden with this history and color combination – it truly is a piece of Volvo history! The first owner received the car in 1995, and since then the entire ownership is described, latest in 2022 to the current owner.
The odometer reading is 87,631 km , which is low for the model year, and can be guaranteed according to the seller.
As a bonus, the majority of the original parts for the bright interior remain and can be purchased separately if interested, giving you the opportunity to restore the car to the unique original condition it was delivered in.

Condition
Body and exterior condition:
The paint is in very good condition thanks to the repaint and a ceramic paint protection – only minor stone chips are present. The headlight lenses and emblems are fresh, and all glass surfaces including the original windshield are in very good condition without disturbing scratches or stone chips.
Interior:
The current black interior is in very good condition, with only a few minor marks on the door sides and a noticeable mark on the door sill on the driver's side. The grey part of the steering wheel has some wear, which can easily be colour-corrected. The controls and buttons are fine. The dashboard has an older cable hole by the radio (probably for a landline/hands-free) and cracks in the plastic casing on the passenger side. The headliner is fine but has loosened slightly in the rear glue.
Tires and rims:
The tires are in almost new condition .
Mechanics and function:
The engine runs very nicely and stably, without any noise or problems. The brakes are in good condition with perforated discs at the rear and slotted discs at the front. The gearbox is generally good, but at low load and jerky driving, 3rd gear can jump out (probably linkage adjustment required, no big problem). Driveline in good condition. All other mechanics work as they should, according to the seller.
Service history
Service documentation is partially available, with mixed documents and inspection reports that accompany the car and can be seen in the pictures. Service book is missing, but the latest service consisted of an oil change and oil filter change, carried out by the current owner. The car has been inspected with a passing result no later than 2025-07-30 .
In summary – even though the service book is missing, there is proven continuity, and the car has been well cared for over the years.
