Basic information and history

The Mercedes-Benz 230 (W114) belongs to the so-called Strich Acht generation (/8) which was introduced in the late 1960s. Also called Kompakt in Sweden. The series was designed by Paul Bracq and quickly became known for its solid construction, its clear lines and a chassis balance that provided long-distance comfort without completely giving up the driving feel. The six-cylinder models combined a straight six-cylinder engine with carburetor technology at a time when Mercedes-Benz prioritized reliability and robust mechanics.

This example is from 1974 and refers to a W114 230.6, i.e. a 2.3-liter inline six (internal designation M180.954), with carburetor. The stated odometer reading is 57,181 km and it is likely that the odometer has been revved. The car was first registered in Sweden on 1981-02-20 and had one owner between 1985 and 2021, which may explain the overall feeling of preserved integrity. The car is reportedly sold new in Sweden. The documentation includes inspection reports, Carfax and a manual. Other history or service records are missing.

The body has been rust-repaired by previous owners and given new front fenders, and has been repainted sometime in the last five years. The windshield is said to be original from 1974 with two small stone chips on the right half of the window. The chrome details are mostly described as fine, with a note of slightly worn lower side moldings. The interior, apart from a sunken driver's seat, is in exceptionally good condition. All in all, this makes the car interesting for those who appreciate the qualities and proportions of the W114 series, at a level that neither appears as untouched veteran nor complete renovation.

Condition

Body and exterior The paintwork is described as being in very good condition after being repainted by the previous owner. There are small marks on the rear edge of the driver's door and on the front edge of the right passenger door. The front fenders have been replaced and rust has been repaired. The glass is in good condition with two stone chips in the front window which are said to be original from 1974. The chrome, moldings, headlight lenses and emblems are generally fine, with the chrome moldings at the bottom of the body sides being slightly worn, while the rest of the chrome is described as being really good. Especially the bumpers.

Interior The interior is in good condition. The driver's seat is slightly worn, the back seat is said to be in new condition. The carpets are intact and nice. The headliner is very fresh, whole and without discoloration. The steering wheel, controls and buttons are in good condition with a note on the chrome on the light switch/turn signal lever which is slightly chipped. All controls are intact and functional according to the seller. It even has the original Blaupunkt radio.

Tires and rims Nexen tires with a stated tread depth of approximately 7 mm. The sheet metal rims are slightly scratched. The hubcaps are in adequate condition.

Mechanics and function The engine runs smoothly and well according to the seller. The gearbox shifts nicely and the drivetrain is described as being in very good condition. The brakes hold well. The last service is unknown and the maintenance intervals cannot therefore be confirmed with receipts.

Service history

The last known service is not documented. According to the seller, there are inspection reports and Carfax, as well as a manual. Otherwise, service reports and receipts are missing. Interested buyers should therefore assume that a basic service with fluids, filters, ignition parts and an overhaul of the fuel and cooling systems is required to ensure continued operation.

The last inspection was carried out on 2022-04-26. The car is now exempt from inspection.

Summary

A Mercedes-Benz 230.6 (W114) from 1974 with a stated mileage of 57,181 km, long-term ownership and body work carried out with new front fenders, rust repair and repainting in recent years. The exterior is in very good condition with a few minor complaints, the interior is well preserved with a slightly sunken driver's seat and a very nice headliner. Mechanically, the car feels fresh with a smooth ride, fine gear shifting and working brakes, but with an unknown last service performed.

The documentation includes inspection report, Carfax and manual. The car is said to have been sold in Sweden. Overall, a well-maintained W114 example with relevant cosmetic work carried out and an attractive whole for those who want to drive, preserve and gradually complete the history.
