Basic information and history

The 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint 1600 is the rare transitional model that links the Giulietta Sprint and the later Giulia Sprint GT. The body was designed by Bertone with clear roots in the Scaglione design language, the technology is based on the classic four with double overhead camshafts (bialbero) and a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1962 cars are characterized by low weight, a distinctive front with narrow bumpers and advanced front drum brakes with three leading brake shoes and aluminium drums.

Basic facts according to the seller:

This car was imported to Sweden on 1962-08-04 and was sold new in Sweden on 1962-09-13 according to information from Alfa Romeo. A total of 9 users are known. The first owner is said to have been a well-known executive from Malmö. The last owner bought the car on 2006-07-06 and had it renovated to its current fine condition.

Odometer reading: 134,582 km, guaranteed by the seller.

Notable: The model is considered rare on the market and is often seen as the missing link between the Giulietta and the later Bertone coupes, with likely potential for value appreciation.

Note on use: The car was inspected in 1985 and then in 2025.

Equipment and options

  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts – bialbero
  • Unique front brakes with three brake shoes and aluminium drums
  • Nardi-type steering wheel
  • Older type radio
  • Original chrome according to the seller

Modifications and improvements: The car has had a body and sheet metal renovation followed by a repaint. The engine was renovated after 2005. The brake system was reviewed and renovated for inspection in 2025. The Nardi-type steering wheel is a period accessory rather than an original part.

Condition

Body and exterior: The body has been sheet metal renovated and then repainted. The paint is described as being in very good condition with some dust particles. Glass in good condition. Chrome, moldings, headlight lenses and emblems are said to be original with a few spots in the chrome. See pictures for your own assessment.

Interior: The interior has been renovated and is in very good condition. The headliner, controls and buttons are considered very good. Nardi-type steering wheel fitted. See pictures for your own assessment.

Tires and rims: The tires are older but described as good. The rims are nice and appear to have been renovated, one rim has what looks like paint splashes, perhaps from the paint job. See pictures for your own assessment.

Mechanics and function: The engine was rebuilt after 2005 and runs well according to the seller. The carburetor is recommended to be adjusted before use. The brakes were rebuilt in 2025, with the correct three-brake shoe front drums in aluminium. The gearbox otherwise works well with five gears, but reverse can sometimes jump out. The tachometer does not work but the older type radio works. The car is turned off but fully functional.

Service history

Recent measures: Brake service and review June 2025. Brake system renovated for inspection.

Engine: Renovated after 2005 according to the seller.

Inspection: Approved 2025-07-18. Previously inspected in 1985 and then only in 2025.

Documentation: Inspection reports and spare parts invoices are collected in a binder.

Summary

A Swedish-sold Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint 1600 from 1962 with a documented history, 9 known users and a longer, gentle journey back to the road. The car has undergone a total refurbishment with engine, sheet metal and paint renovation in the last 20 years and the brake system has recently been reviewed. The interior is in very good condition with a Nardi-type steering wheel, while some minor remarks are to be noted such as a non-functioning tachometer, older tires, a need for carburetor adjustment and the reverse gear can sometimes jump out. Since the model is an unusual transitional version between Giulietta and later Bertone coupés, it makes it extra interesting for collectors and connoisseurs. A perfect object for those looking for a correct and characterful 101-series Sprint with Swedish new car delivery and a recently approved inspection.

Hi, I have a few questions since I'm not able to come and inspect the car: 1) does the car have it's original engine and gearbox? 2) are there any pictures of the underside of the car, suspension parts, etc. Was the car originally delivered without rear seats? 3) How complete is the documentation? Thanks in advance for your reply. Roel
