BMW R51/3 1953 – Restored by a Swedish Drag Racing Legend

Basic Information and History

This 1953 BMW R51/3 is a Swedish-sold example with only one previous owner. The motorcycle has a fascinating and personal history, having undergone a full restoration in 2005 by Görgen Carlsson, born in 1929 – a legend in Swedish drag racing and well-known in the speedway and ice racing circles of the 1960s and 70s. Görgen was a passionate builder of racing motorcycles and placed great importance on period correctness, which is evident throughout this machine. It was restored as his final personal project, but sadly, he passed away from cancer in 2013 before he could enjoy the finished motorcycle.

Equipment and Options

  1. Plastic fenders in original style (the only deviation from stock, done discreetly and in period-correct fashion)
  2. Electronic ignition system (upgraded in 2022)
  3. All other specifications preserved according to Görgen’s vision

Condition

The motorcycle is in excellent aesthetic and mechanical condition.

  1. Bodywork: Very good, with no dents, scratches, or door dings
  2. Paint: Repainted in 2005 during the full restoration – high-quality finish, no flaws
  3. Chrome, lenses, and trim: In very good condition
  4. Tires: Replaced during the restoration, barely used since
  5. Controls, switches, and gauges: In excellent condition, no damage or wear

Service History

  1. Full restoration in 2005: body, paint, and mechanical components
  2. Engine: Inspected before sale, carburetors adjusted; minor leak noted at one joint
  3. Ignition: Upgraded to electronic ignition in 2022
  4. Last service: 2023
  5. Brakes, gearbox, and drivetrain: In very good condition
  6. Inspection: Last approved in 2007 – can be inspected again upon agreement at the time of sale
  7. Service book: Not filled in according to manufacturer intervals, which is typical for vehicles of this age

Summary

A unique opportunity to acquire a BMW R51/3 with both soul and history. This is not just a beautiful classic motorcycle from the 1950s – it’s also a piece of Swedish motorsport heritage, thanks to its connection to Görgen Carlsson, a pioneer in drag racing and a mechanic to several well-known drivers during the golden era of motorsports. The restoration was carried out with passion and respect for originality, resulting in a period-correct and well-preserved vehicle ready for both collection and riding.
