Basic information and History

The car from the empire where the sun never sets, the Wolseley 18/85, also known as the BMC ADO17, Austin 1800 and Morris 1800. The car has had many manufacturers over the years and under the name Morris 1800 it was voted "European Car of the Year" in 1965. When the car was introduced in 1964, it was different in its design with its large windows and generous interior. Both Sir Alec Issigonis and the design house Pininfarina helped design the car. Even mechanically, the car was at the forefront with e.g. fluid-filled dampers linked together resulting in a smoother ride than more conventional systems. The brake system was also the modern one with pressure transfer between front and rear carriage.

This Swedish-sold example in dark blue comes with a 1.8-liter carburettor four and automatic transmission. Later models like this got e.g. armrests and other both interior and mechanical upgrades. Perfect copy to have as a rolling project for those who want something different to ride with. There are few people who have seen a Wolseley 18/85 and the looks and questions have been many on the hits the car has been on.

Equipment and Options

Period interior with wood and classic Smiths gauges. Dark blue vinyl and gray headliner. A somewhat modern cassette player type Blaupunkt Stockholm R26 unit has been installed as well as retrofitted speakers.

Condition

Exterior-wise, the car is perceived to have fared relatively well over the years. However, the paint has cracks and marks in most places. Rust is present in places and the visible is documented in pictures. Moldings are old and cracked. The headlight glass from Lucas appears to be in good condition. The Minilite rims are also in good condition.

The years have also left their mark on the interior, but the condition is still within the limits of good. Materials on the door sides and the seats have held up well without major wear and tear. Marks and scratches are present, but nothing critically cracked. The inner ceiling has damage in places but does not hang. The wooden interior has lost the surface layer in places.

Mechanically, the car has normal wear but runs as it should. Main switch is installed next to the battery. Normal surface rust is present on some parts under the hood. There are a number of spare parts that can be included in the deal.

Service history

There is some previous documentation, e.g. inspections from the 80s, but no service history. However, receipts and other documentation show that the vehicle has been kept in good condition over the years.

Summary

A striking and unusual 4-door sedan from 1960s England in good running condition. Perfect as a renovation object or a different summer trailer!
