SAAB 93 B De Luxe 1959 – Swedish Icon with Documented History
Basic Information and History
This 1959 SAAB 93 B De Luxe is a piece of Swedish automotive history, presented in very good condition with a unique ownership history. The car was sold new on July 10, 1959, to assembly worker Sven Johansson in Linköping via Philipsons Bil AB. The current owner first bought the car in 1967 and kept it until 1968, later repurchasing it in 2013 from the estate of the man who had owned it continuously since 1968 – a man born in 1920 who, according to documentation, cared for the vehicle diligently.
In total, the car has had four previous users plus the current owner. Original documents from 1959 are included, such as the owner’s manual, accessories list, and a price list for SAAB two-stroke repairs. A number of inspection records are also preserved, even though the vehicle is now exempt from inspections. The last approved inspection was carried out on 2017-06-27 without any remarks.
The odometer shows 71,320 km, but the actual mileage cannot be guaranteed – it is believed to have covered more than that.
Equipment and Options
- Extra engine: 750cc, refurbished, included with the car
- Tow hitch
- Protective seat covers on the front seats
- Original documentation: owner’s manual, accessories list, repair price list, original papers
- The body has been fully repainted with high-quality preparation by a skilled painter
Condition
The bodywork is in very good condition with no rust, dents, or scratches. It was repainted approximately 15 years ago and has been carefully maintained since. Glass, chrome, light lenses, and emblems are all in good condition. The tires are roadworthy but should be reviewed. The wheels are undamaged.
The interior is acceptable considering the age of the car. The front seats are protected by covers (the condition of the original upholstery underneath is unknown). Door panels, door sills, dashboard, headliner, steering wheel, and controls are in good condition.
The engine – a classic two-stroke – is in acceptable condition, and the car comes with an extra, refurbished 750cc engine. The gearbox is a three-speed with an unsynchronized first gear, which was standard for the model. The braking system was overhauled after the 2013 repurchase, and the car has been driven only about 2,500 km since. All mechanical systems are functioning as they should.
Service History
No service book is filled out according to the manufacturer’s intervals, which is common for vehicles of this age. However, numerous inspection reports and documentation from previous owners are included. The current owner has carried out annual checks and visual inspections since 2013. A major overhaul, including the brake system, was completed upon repurchase.
Trivia
This is more than just a SAAB – it’s a rolling piece of Swedish social history! The car comes from a time when a few kronor filled your tank, starting the car required using the choke, and the scent of two-stroke oil filled the morning air. With its characteristic three-cylinder song, this car evokes memories, brings smiles – and occasionally wakes the neighbors during warm-ups!
Driving a SAAB 93 is like stepping back to a time when cars had soul, and every gear change required a bit of finesse. You even get an unsynchronized first gear – like a built-in safety course in vintage driving technique!
Worried about spare parts? Don’t be – a fully rebuilt 750cc engine is included! It’s like getting a spare liver in case the car ever needs a new heart.
Summary
This SAAB 93 B De Luxe is a rare opportunity to acquire a well-preserved example of one of SAAB’s most classic models. With intact history, original documentation, and an extra refurbished engine, it’s a car for collectors and enthusiasts. It has been cherished and maintained with passion – by an owner who himself sold and serviced SAABs during the 1960s and 70s.
The current owner is selling due to age but hopes the next caretaker will recognize the value in this piece of Swedish engineering and nostalgia. A car that tells a story – and is ready for the next chapter.
