Ford Mustang — America's Muscle Icon
The horse that changed the automotive world
On April 17, 1964, Ford introduced its Mustang at the New York World's Fair — and in that moment created a whole new car category: the pony car. Lee Iacocca's vision of an affordable, sporty car for young buyers was an immediate success. Ford sold 22,000 units on the first day and over a million in the first 18 months.
In Sweden, the Mustang has always had a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts. It represents freedom, power and the American dream culture — but also a surprisingly accessible way into the world of vintage cars.
Generations of Ford Mustang
First generation (1964½–1973)
The most iconic Mustangs. Early models with the 289 cui V8 are elegant and relatively easy to drive. The fastback body (especially 1967–1968) is the most sought-after. The legendary Boss 302, Boss 429 and Shelby GT350/GT500 variants have reached seven-figure prices internationally, but standard V8 models are still affordable.
Often referred to as the "forgotten" Mustang — smaller, heavier, and with weaker engines due to the oil crisis. But affordable to buy today, and the Cobra II and King Cobra are starting to appreciate in value.
Fox Body (1979–1993)
The angular Fox Body Mustang dominated the drag racing scene in the 80s. The 5.0 GT with its pushrod V8 is a cult classic. Cheap, easy to modify and with a huge selection of parts. A hidden gem that is starting to rise in value.
SN95 & New Edge (1994–2004)
A return to rounder shapes. The Cobra models with their DOHC engines (especially the 2003–2004 Terminator with supercharger) are seriously fast and collectible.
S197 & S550 (2005–2023)
Retro-inspired design that became a global success. The GT models with the Coyote 5.0 V8 (from 2011) offer modern performance in a classic shell. The Shelby GT350 with the Voodoo engine (526 hp, 8,250 rpm) and the GT500 with the supercharged 760 hp are already sought-after collector cars.
S650 (2024–)
The seventh generation Mustang was presented in 2022 and came to Sweden in 2024. Still rear-wheel drive with the familiar Coyote 5.0 V8 (453 hp) or EcoBoost 2.3T, but with a completely new platform, updated technology and a significantly tougher look. The top model Dark Horse with hand-built Coyote (500 hp) and Tremec 6-speed manual is the performance icon of the generation. The S650 is still too new to have reached the secondary market to any significant extent, but is expected to be popular on Bidders Highway in the future.

Buying guide: Ford Mustang
What to look out for?
- Rust: The absolute most important thing on all Mustangs, especially pre-1973. Check the floors, sills, front fenders, wheel arches and torpedo beams. Imported cars from California/Arizona are usually in better condition.
- Matching numbers: Check that the engine and transmission match the VIN number. Cars with the original engine are worth significantly more.
- Body type: Fastback > Coupe > Convertible in popularity (but convertibles charge more in the summer).
- Electrical system: Early Mustangs have simple 12V electrical that can be worn out. Check grounds and wiring.
- Fox Body: Check for cracks in the torque boxes — a known problem with hard driving.
Recommended models/specs
- Best for the money: Fox Body 5.0 GT (1986–1993) — huge replacement stock, cheap to maintain, true V8 feel.
- Classic: 1967–1968 Fastback 289/302 — iconic design, reasonable prices compared to Shelby models.
- Modern muscle: S197 GT (2011–2014) with Coyote 5.0 — 420+ hp, modern technology, reliable.
- Investment: 1969–1970 Mach 1 or Boss 302 — steadily rising, especially with documentation.
Tip
- Imported cars from dry American states are often rust-free — require shipping and customs documentation.
- Automatic transmissions (C4/C6) are more common and cheaper, but manuals (4-speed Toploader) are more sought after.
- Parts for the 1964–1973 Mustang are among the most readily available in the entire vintage car world.
